Challenge 3 · Desenho Estrutural & Cálculos de Carga / Structural Design & Load Calculations
Design a small structure (shed, shelter, pavilion) for your site. Size it realistically. Prove it won't collapse.
Tasks
- Program: define use (shelter, storage, studio, community space), occupants, weather exposure. List loads: roof (self-weight + rain/snow if applicable), occupants (150 kg per person), live load factor (1.5x for safety).
- Sketch & dimension: plan view, elevation, section. Show: span (distance between supports), height, roof pitch, wall thickness.
- Load calculation: (1) roof load per square meter (material weight + environmental load), (2) total roof load (area × load/m²), (3) load per support (total load ÷ number of supports).
- Column design: using simple formulas (provided), calculate required column diameter for your span and load. Sketch tapered column (if using fractal design) with dimensions.
- CAD or hand-drawn plan set: 1:50 scale, fully dimensioned, showing all structural elements and load paths. Rough estimates OK; precision in method required.

Design Package: architectural drawings (plan, elevation, section), load calculations (one page of math, clearly shown), column design with diameter and taper, and a materials estimate (cubic meters of earth, linear meters of wood, square meters of roof).
Stretch Goal
Design two alternatives (e.g., straight columns vs. tapered, different roof pitch) and compare structural efficiency (kg of material per unit load capacity). Which is lighter? Why?
