Challenge 4 · Planejamento de Clima & Durabilidade / Climate Planning & Durability
Specify how your structure will survive your local weather. Design for 50+ years with minimal maintenance.
Tasks
- Climate data: find annual rainfall, peak rain month, temperature range, humidity, wind speed for your region. Plot on a graph or table.
- Roof design: calculate overhang (setback from wall edge to protect earthen surface). Rule of thumb: at least 0.5-1m in tropics, 0.3m in dry regions. Specify roof material (thatch, tiles, shingles, composite) and pitch for water shedding.
- Drainage: sketch how water flows away from structure. Include: grading (slope), gutters (if any), discharge (where does water go? Can it be harvested?). Specify soil permeability to prevent foundation saturation.
- Finish specification: choose 1 external finish (earth plaster, lime wash, natural oil, cement-free sealant). Specify maintenance schedule (re-coat every X years).
- Maintenance checklist: month-by-month or seasonal tasks. Example: April—inspect roof, June—re-lime plaster if needed, etc. Realistic for 1-2 people to execute.
✓ Checkpoint · Entrega · Planejamento de Clima & Durabilidade / Climate Planning & Durability
Climate & Durability Report: climate data and graphs, roof design with overhang calculation, drainage sketch and narrative, finish choice with maintenance plan, and a 50-year longevity projection (one page, PT or EN). Include photos or sketches of existing structures in your region and why they last.
Stretch Goal
Adapt your design for a harsher climate (temperate with snow, arid with UV, tropical monsoon). How would specifications change? What is the cost/complexity trade-off?
