Nodal lines solve cos(nπx)cos(mπy) − cos(mπx)cos(nπy) = 0 — the free-edge square plate. Grains are agitated in proportion to local displacement, so they random-walk away from antinodes and accumulate where the plate is still. Pitch is mapped to a mode by f ∝ m²+n²; the Plate slider sets the constant, i.e. how big and stiff the plate is.
