# Book VI — Opening Note (draft)

## The "imaginary origin" framing

Book 6 opens by stating plainly: this volume is a **natural continuation** of the
series into complex territory — and "complex" here does not mean "imaginary" in
the colloquial sense. It means $\mathbb{C}$, the field where $J^2 = -\mathrm{id}$,
derived in Book 4 from the commutator $[F,T]$.

The framing device: **io — imaginary origin**.

- Read as two glyphs, *io* is $i$ and $o$: the imaginary unit and the origin.
- *i* is the object whose square is $-1$ — a 90° rotation.
- *o* is the origin, the zero, and the unit circle $e^{i\theta}$ traced as a loop —
  the point everything turns about.
- Side by side they are exactly the two pieces the complex plane needs to exist.

**The pedagogical point:** novice readers hit $i = \sqrt{-1}$ and reach for
"imaginary = not real = doesn't exist." Book 6 should open by dismantling that
before a single equation appears — using the imaginary-origin reading as the hook.
Complex numbers are not the *opposite* of real; they are real numbers plus a 90°
rotation operator. The "imaginary" axis is exactly as real as the rotation that
takes you from facing north to facing east.

## Structural note

This ties directly to Vol IV Ch 15 (*The Complex Turn*): $J = \tfrac{1}{\lambda}[F,T]$,
$J^2 = -\mathrm{id}$. Book 6 should open by re-deriving this informally in plain
language before the formal recap, using the imaginary-origin / rotation framing.

## The turn — playful to serious, early

Book 6 should carry one explicit turn, early: the wordplay was the door, not the
room. $J^2 = -\mathrm{id}$ is not a pun about "io" — it is a derived fact from
Ch 15's commutator. State this plainly, once, without irony, and move on. Keep the
opening light, but stop leaning on the wordplay as the argument.

## The vow — held in reserve

The four-vow closing structure (zeros numberless / non-integrability inexhaustible /
root systems boundless / Global Positivity unsurpassable — "I vow to attempt it")
belongs at the *end*, after E₈, where the series has actually earned the register.
Vowing to attempt the Global Positivity Theorem means more after 100+ pages of
root-system machinery than it would as a cute epigraph on page 1.

**Net effect:** a light opening, an unforced turn to seriousness early in Book 6,
and the vow held in reserve as the closing gesture of the E₈ volume — earned, not
decorative.
