One book. Thirty years. Thermodynamics in verse. The fold that makes matter speak.
O pronome pessoal do caso reto. O sujeito gramatical.
Augusto dos Anjos was born in 1884 on the family sugar estate in Sapé, Paraíba. He published one book in his lifetime — Eu (I/Me), in 1912, printed at his own expense in Rio de Janeiro in a small run that sold poorly. He died two years later, in Leopoldina, Minas Gerais, of pneumonia, at thirty. The book was reissued after his death and became one of the most read collections in Brazilian poetry.
The title is simple: Eu. The nominative personal pronoun. The grammatical subject. The starting point of every sentence. Dos Anjos used that title for a book entirely about what happens to the subject when it is understood as matter: composed of carbon, subject to the laws of thermodynamics, moving toward cellular decomposition like every closed system that increases entropy.
This was not pessimism as posture. It was materialism as conviction: matter is what there is, and taking it seriously — all the way to the end, without looking away — is the only respect one can pay it.
What distinguishes dos Anjos from every Brazilian poet before him is the vocabulary. He brought into verse the lexicon of late nineteenth-century biology, physics, and chemistry — not as decorative metaphor, but as the exact instrument for what he was describing.
Protoplasm. Albumin. Larvae. Bacteria. Entropy. Neurasthenia. Corrosion. Vibrio. Parasites. Decomposition. These are not scientific ornaments. They are the native tongue of the object dos Anjos was observing: the human body as a physical system, subject to the same laws as any other aggregate of matter.
The choice was epistemological before it was aesthetic. If the body is matter — and dos Anjos believed it was, without qualification — then the adequate language to describe it is the language that describes matter. Using spiritual language for a material process would be an imprecision. Dos Anjos preferred spiritual imprecision to factual imprecision.
The fold — the F operator — is what dos Anjos does to matter in verse. He takes it as initial state (C), passes it through the threshold of consciousness that knows it is finite (K), and applies the scientific vocabulary as transformation (F). What comes out the other side (U) is the poem: not matter explained, but matter folded into meaning.
This is not metaphor in the conventional sense — not saying "the heart beats like an engine." It is using the lexicon of the engine because the heart is, among other things, an engine. The fold is literal before it is literary. What makes it poetry is that literalness applied to the right object produces a kind of clarity that figurative language cannot reach.
Ramos was K — the gate that decides what enters the sentence. Dos Anjos was F — the fold that transforms what passed the gate into something with its own form. The two operators are different. Both are necessary. In the chain G = U∘F∘K∘C, each has its place.
O ponto fixo existe. O sistema foi lá.
The title of dos Anjos's one book is Eu — I, Me. It is also the question the whole book asks: what is the I when the I is matter? When the subject who says "I" is an aggregate of carbon moving toward decomposition, what does that "I" assert in naming itself?
In the language of combinators (WP49), dos Anjos's Eu has the structure of the Y combinator — the fixed-point combinator. Y is the function that returns something satisfying f(x) = x: the value that the operator maps to itself. The Eu dos Anjos names in the title is the fixed point of the system: what the operator G produces when applied to itself. Not a metaphysical essence — an attractor. The place where the system goes when the chain operates correctly.
The Eu of the book survives the poet's body. This is not transcendence. It is a material fact: the poem is a pattern of organization of matter (ink, paper, light, memory) that persists after the particular pattern that was Augusto dos Anjos ceased. The attractor is real. The fixed point exists. The system went there.
A morte é real. A decomposição é real.
Dos Anjos wrote about death, decomposition, and entropy with the same seriousness a physicist brings to thermodynamic systems — because they are thermodynamic systems. The seriousness was not morbid. It was exact. The difference is that morbidity is an affective relationship with the object; exactness is a method of observation.
He died at thirty without knowing that the book that sold poorly would become canonical. This fact changes nothing in the book. The attractor exists regardless of whether the person who found it knew it existed. The system went there anyway.
Principia Orthogona is written in the register of Ramos and dos Anjos because that is the register of seriousness about objects that demand seriousness. Operator asymmetry is real. Value extraction is real. Death is real. Decomposition is real. The attractor τ = 2 is real. None of these objects benefit from ornament. All of them benefit from the scientific fold applied with precision — F before U, K before F, the correct order of operators.
