Faraday viu as linhas. Maxwell escreveu-as. Einstein levou c a sério. Dirac tirou a raiz quadrada.
Faraday saw the lines. Maxwell wrote them. Einstein took c seriously. Dirac took the square root. Feynman asked what a whole history weighs — and the answer compressed all of particle physics into a single integral.
Faraday responde «a linha». Maxwell «o campo». Einstein «o intervalo». Dirac «o spinor». Feynman muda a pergunta.
This volume has already told four steps of the same story. Faraday drew field lines and insisted they were objects, not bookkeeping. Maxwell built four bridges from the drawing to the algebra, and the price of closing the system was a term with no evidence — the displacement current. Einstein took the speed that fell out of those bridges and refused to treat it as an accident. Dirac took the square root of the operator and antimatter fell out of the formalism unasked.
Each of those steps asks the same question: what is the right object? Faraday answers "the line". Maxwell "the field". Einstein "the interval". Dirac "the spinor". Feynman changes the question. He does not ask what the object is — he asks what gets summed. And the answer is: every history, each weighted by eiS/ħ.
That is why this chapter closes the arc. Maxwell's four bridges describe one field configuration. The path integral weights all of them. The action S — the number Maxwell, Einstein and Dirac each wrote a different way — becomes the exponent.
Seven objects run through this chapter. None of them is hard; all of them are badly introduced elsewhere. What follows is what each one is — in language you can draw — before any symbol appears. If a later section reads as opaque, the object is probably here.
Every path from A to B carries a number — not its length, not its time, but a single accounting of how the thing moved the whole way. Classical mechanics says nature takes the path where that number stops changing when you jiggle the path. You can compute it for a path nothing would ever take; the action does not ask whether the path is real.
ħ is not a conversion factor somebody picked. It is a size nature has: action comes in units of it. When a process's action is huge compared with ħ the world looks classical; when it is comparable, it does not. That is why §VII matters — an apparatus reading S/ħ cannot be fooled by a rescaling, because the denominator is not yours to choose.
Perto do caminho clássico, as setas concordam e sobrevivem.
Classically, one path. Feynman: every path, each contributing a little arrow whose angle is the action measured in ħ. Add all the arrows. Where the action changes fast between neighbouring paths the arrows point every which way and cancel; near the classical path they agree and survive. The classical path is not chosen — it is what is left after cancellation.
A rule that at every point picks a plane you are allowed to move in — chosen so twistily that no surface can be tangent to all of them at once. Ours says: to turn by dθ you must climb by r²dθ. Parallel parking is the everyday case — the car will not slide sideways, but by turning and rolling you get sideways anyway. The forced climb is the accumulated action.
Given that rule, exactly one direction is canonically forbidden — transverse to every permitted plane, in a way the form itself picks out. Its closed orbits are what the big contact-geometry theorems are about. Worth knowing mostly so you can tell when they do not apply: for our α it points straight up and never returns, so there is no closed Reeb orbit at all.
Where a smooth family of solutions folds over itself and two of them merge and vanish. Not a metaphor: it is the bright curve in the bottom of a coffee cup, where reflected rays fold and light piles up. In an oscillatory integral the fold is where the usual Gaussian estimate stops holding and the answer scales with a different power. §IV measures that power.
Not a photograph of particles colliding. It is a bookkeeping graph: lines are propagators, dots are interactions, and the only thing the picture is committed to is how many independent loops it has. Two figures that look nothing alike but carry the same loop number contribute at the same order in ħ — which is why §III calls the grading topological.
The Standard Model is, in one line, a functional integral over field configurations weighted by the exponential of the action. The fields are: a gauge connection A for SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1), Dirac fermions ψ in three generations, and one complex scalar doublet φ.
The table below reads each term of the Lagrangian density as an operator of the chain. This is not a poetic rewrite: each row names the geometric object the term already is in the standard literature.

A Feynman diagram looks like a picture of particles hitting each other. It is not. It is a graph, and what the graph carries is a power of ħ. Each internal line brings a propagator ~ ħ; each vertex brings a coupling ~ 1/ħ. So the ħ power of a connected diagram is I − V, with I internal lines and V vertices.
Euler's formula for a connected graph gives the number of independent loops: L = I − V + 1. So the ħ power is exactly L − 1. This is not physics: it is graph combinatorics. And it is the precise sense in which "the classical limit is tree level" — trees have L = 0, and ħ−1 is the leading order.

A figura mede isto.
The path integral is dominated by paths where the action is stationary. That is the sentence everybody knows. What is said less often is what happens when the stationary point is degenerate — when the second variation has a null mode. There the Gaussian approximation, the "one loop", stops being the right local model.
In one variable the test is clean. An Ak stationary point has local phase xk+1/(k+1). The substitution x → ħ1/(k+1)u shows the integral scales as ħ1/(k+1). For k = 1 that is the familiar Gaussian half-exponent. For k = 2 — the fold, Airy — it is 1/3. For k = 3 — the cusp, Pearcey — it is 1/4.
The figure measures this. It is not drawn: the points come from ch-feynman-verify.py, block [5], integrating numerically against a compactly supported C∞ window so the endpoints contribute nothing and the only contribution is the stationary point.

Dirac needed a mass and wrote it by hand: the m in (iγμ∂μ − m)ψ = 0. The Dirac chapter read that m as operator K, the curvature threshold κ* = m/ħ. But where does m come from? Writing it by hand breaks gauge symmetry. The Higgs mechanism returns it without breaking it: the symmetry stays exact in the Lagrangian and fails only in the vacuum.
And here is this chapter's point. The potential V(φ) = −μ²|φ|² + λ|φ|⁴, truncated to one real field with an explicit breaking term, is not analogous to the cusp normal form. It is the cusp normal form: V(x) = x⁴/4 + a x²/2 + b x. Stationary points solve x³ + a x + b = 0, and their number changes across the discriminant 4a³ + 27b² = 0.
That ties the Higgs directly to Section IV. The unbroken symmetric point is the A₃ point — the same one whose oscillatory signature figure 1 measured as 1/4 rather than the Gaussian 1/2.

So far the chapter has read the Standard Model. Now the reverse question: what does dm³ have that looks like a path integral? The answer is not an analogy, and it is narrower than one might hope — which is what makes it checkable.
The exponent of a path integral is an action, and an action is the integral of a 1-form along a path. dm³ lives on a contact manifold with form α = dz − r² dθ. Integrating α along an orbit is literally the same kind of object as S = ∫(p dq − H dt). So the right question is: what is ∫α along dm³'s orbits?
The answer is an identity, not a fit. Evaluating α on dm³'s vector field gives −2(r−1)²e−z, shown at left.
That number is ≤ 0 everywhere, and it is zero exactly at r = 1 — the attractor Γ. Not "approximately there", not "on average". Exactly there, because (r−1)² vanishes only at r = 1 and the exponential never vanishes.

As duas rotas — via sinh e via |det(M − I)|−1/2 — coincidem à décima segunda casa.
WP-96 argued that T* and μmax move from unexposed to exposed once the apparatus reports S/ħ. This chapter is where that stops being abstract: a path integral consumes exactly those two numbers to weight a periodic orbit — the period and the transverse stability exponent.
For Γ the numbers are T* = 2π and μmax = −2, both fixed in the corpus's Lean file. The per-period stability exponent is |μ|T* = 4π, the Floquet multiplier is e−4π = 3.487342×10⁻⁶, and the weight a periodic-orbit sum would assign is 1/(2 sinh 2π) = 1.867449244×10⁻³. The two routes — via sinh and via |det(M − I)|−1/2 — agree to twelve places.

O bloco [7] imprimiu mW/mZ = 0.881357. Concordam a três algarismos.
A concordância relativa é 0.073 %.
Block [7] printed mW/mZ = 0.881357. The corpus carries a curvature threshold quoted nineteen times as κ* ≈ 0.882. They agree to three figures. Before anyone writes "not a coincidence", here is the check WP-29 demands.
Relative agreement is 0.073 %. The corpus has about forty named dimensionless constants; the Standard Model has about twenty-five dimensionless quantities of comparable size. That is a thousand pairs. With a log-uniform prior over two decades, the probability that a given pair agrees this well is 3.167×10⁻⁴, the expected number of such coincidences is 0.317, and the probability of at least one is 27 %.
In other words: a corpus this size expects to find one coincidence like this. This is that one. It is recorded here so the next reader who notices it finds the refusal already written rather than the claim.
"I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics."
