This mini-course was designed to introduce undergraduate students to Mathematical and Computational Modeling. The main focus is on modeling questions — physical, mathematical, and numerical alike. The computer is used as a "mathematical laboratory".
A widespread difficulty is observed today — in the best universities, both in Brazil and abroad — in students' ability to transform a problem stated in words into a mathematical problem. This difficulty lies precisely in the transition from the physical model to the mathematical model. In the introduction, we draw an analogy with translation between two languages: Portuguese and mathematics.
The mathematical models used in this book are ordinary and partial differential equations (ODE and PDE). Basic concepts will be introduced and then verified through computational experiments. No prior knowledge of ODEs or PDEs is expected.

O Matemático como Tradutor The Mathematician as Translator
Problems in Applied Mathematics are generally presented in words, without formulas. The applied mathematician must learn to act as a simultaneous translator, converting the problem from words into the language of mathematics — "mathese" — and back again.
onde $N(t)$ é a população no instante $t$ e $\lambda$ é a constante de proporcionalidade.
where $N(t)$ is the population at time $t$ and $\lambda$ is the proportionality constant.
A solução numérica avança passo a passo, aproximando a derivada por diferenças finitas avançadas.
The numerical solution advances step by step, approximating the derivative with forward finite differences.
