He Named It Before It Could Be Proved
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a Jesuit priest who spent his adult life digging in the earth — literally, as a paleontologist who worked on the discovery of Peking Man, and figuratively, as a theologian who tried to dig down beneath the separation between science and faith to find the common layer.
What he came up with, over the course of decades of writing that his order would not permit him to publish during his lifetime, was a vision of the universe as a converging process. Not a random one, not a meaningless one, but one that was — measurably, directionally, irresistibly — moving toward greater complexity, greater consciousness, and finally toward a single point of total convergence he called, borrowing the last letter of the Greek alphabet, the Omega Point.

He was not a mathematician in the technical sense. He did not write equations. What he wrote was a sustained argument, across hundreds of pages, that the direction of history — biological, psychological, spiritual — could be read from the data of evolution, and that the data pointed to something.
He named that something. He could not prove it. The proof — the one that shows a sequence of n-bonacci limits approaching but never exceeding τ = 2 — came much later, in a Lean 4 file called Chain.lean. This chapter is about why the name came first, and why that matters.
The Noosphere and the Fold
Teilhard's central idea is not the Omega Point — that is the destination. His central idea is the noosphere: the layer of mind and consciousness that has grown around the Earth the way the biosphere grew around rock. Evolution, in his reading, is not merely biological. It is a process of increasing complexity and interiority — from matter to life, from life to consciousness, from consciousness to shared consciousness — and the noosphere is the most recent layer of that process, still forming.
In the framework of this book, the noosphere is the fold. It is the moment where the system reaches a critical threshold — where consciousness stops being a property of individual organisms and becomes a field — and cannot go back. The Whitney A₁ fold, in the mathematics, is the point where two branches of a solution curve meet and merge, and what was local becomes global. Teilhard was describing exactly that, in the language of evolutionary theology.
Teilhard called it "hominisation" — the process by which matter folded back on itself enough times to become something that could think about matter. He did not have the vocabulary of singularity theory. But "folded back on itself" is, with some precision, what a Whitney A₁ fold is. He saw the shape before the mathematics could name it.
The Convergence He Could Name But Not Prove
The Omega Point is not, in Teilhard's writing, a vague mystical destination. It is a structural claim: that the universe has a direction, and that the direction is convergent, and that convergence has a limit. He was right on all three counts. What he could not do was write down the limit.
The n-bonacci sequences do this. Fibonacci gives φ ≈ 1.618. Tribonacci gives η ≈ 1.839. Tetranacci gives Δ ≈ 1.927. Pentanacci gives Σ ≈ 1.966. Hexabonacci gives Ω ≈ 1.984. The limit of all of them, as you keep adding more starting terms, approaches exactly 2 — and never exceeds it. In the Omega Point framework, that limit is τ = 2, the embodiment threshold, the point at which the recurrence saturates.
Teilhard called this τ = 2 the Omega Point. He did not know that it was a theorem about n-bonacci sequences. He knew that whatever you called it, the universe was converging toward it, and that the convergence was real.

The Mathematics — Gently
Teilhard never used the word "convergence" in a technical mathematical sense. But convergence — in the technical sense — means exactly what he described: a sequence of values that gets closer and closer to a limit without quite reaching it. The n-bonacci ladder is convergent, in that precise sense, to τ = 2. Teilhard was doing mathematics with his whole body, in the field, in the theology, in the evolutionary biology — and arriving at the same answer the equations give.
Imagine a staircase where each step gets you halfway closer to the ceiling. You are always getting closer. You never quite arrive. But the ceiling is real — it is there, it is bounded, you can see it. That is what τ = 2 is. Teilhard called the ceiling the Omega Point. This book calls it τ = 2. Both names are correct.
The Sorry He Was Never Allowed to Speak
Teilhard submitted his major works to Rome for permission to publish. Rome declined, repeatedly, over a period of decades. The Phenomenon of Man was finished by 1940. It was not published until after his death in 1955, and it appeared without an imprimatur — the Church's official authorization. He was silenced not because his ideas were proven wrong, but because they were too large, too unclassified, too hard to fit into the existing categories.
He named the destination. He could not prove the convergence formally, and he could not publish the naming. His sorry was not intellectual — he knew what he had seen. His sorry was institutional: the proof and the permission both arrived after he was gone. GTCT's Chain.lean closed the first gap. The second gap closed with time.
What He Gave This Book
Every book needs a name that is larger than itself — a name that tells the reader, before a single page is read, what the territory is. "Omega Point" does that. It says: there is a destination. It is bounded. It is real. And the universe is converging toward it from below, asymptotically, one n-bonacci rung at a time.
Teilhard de Chardin gave this book its name. Chain.lean gave the name a proof. This chapter is the place where the two are introduced to each other.
