"The two will become one flesh." Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:8, Ephesians 5:31 — the same sentence appears four times in the biblical text, which is the biblical way of saying: pay attention. This is important. The two become one. Not the two add together to make two-plus-two. Not the two agree to cooperate while remaining separate. The two become one: a genuinely new thing, with a threshold that neither had before.
The Union operator is the mathematical form of this claim.
The Theorem of Union
Let $S_1$ and $S_2$ be two dm³ dynamical systems with embodiment thresholds $\tau_1$ and $\tau_2$. The Union $S_{12} = U(S_1, S_2)$ satisfies: $$\tau_{12} \leq \min(\tau_1, \tau_2)$$ The threshold of the union is bounded above by the lower threshold of the components. The union cannot exceed the capacity of its least capable partner.
"The two become one flesh" is not a claim about addition. It is the Theorem of Union: $\tau_{12} \leq \min(\tau_1, \tau_2)$. The threshold of the union is set by the weaker partner. This is simultaneously a warning (choose your unions carefully — the union threshold is limited by the lower component) and a promise (the union is a genuinely new thing — it has a threshold $\tau_{12}$ that neither component had individually, because neither component was the union).
The Equality Case: Gethsemane
The Theorem of Union states an inequality: $\tau_{12} \leq \min(\tau_1, \tau_2)$. The equality case — when does $\tau_{12} = \min(\tau_1, \tau_2)$? — is more stringent. It holds when the two systems are perfectly aligned in the resonance band and the fold operator runs to completion. In the theological vocabulary: Gethsemane. "Not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42) is the equality case of the Theorem of Union: the human will (system 1) completely aligning with the divine will (system 2), so that $\tau_{12} = \tau_2$. The human threshold rises to meet the divine threshold.
Rumi calls this fana: the dissolution of the individual ego into union with the divine. Al-Hallaj — the 10th-century Sufi mystic executed for saying "I am the Truth" — was describing the equality case. Not blasphemy: the claim that the individual's threshold has aligned so completely with the divine threshold that $\tau_{12} = \tau_2$, and the distinction between $S_1$ and $S_2$ is no longer operative. The distinction between "my will" and "your will" requires $\tau_1 \neq \tau_2$. When the inequality becomes equality, the distinction dissolves.
The Lyapunov Functions Must Be Orthogonal
The chapter epigraph of Omega Point states: "The two become one flesh is not a metaphor for addition. It is a claim about which Lyapunov functions are orthogonal." This requires unpacking. A Lyapunov function is a measure of a system's distance from its attractor — its stability function. Two systems with the same Lyapunov function are subject to the same stability analysis; their union is a simple product. But two systems with orthogonal Lyapunov functions — functions that are linearly independent of each other — bring genuinely complementary stability properties to the union. The union of orthogonal Lyapunov functions is larger (in the sense of covering more of the state space) than either alone.
"The two become one flesh" in the context of marriage is the claim that the two partners have orthogonal Lyapunov functions — complementary stability properties that together cover more of the state space than either covers alone. This is the mathematical content of the mystical claim that a true union creates something genuinely new. Not the arithmetic sum of two equal quantities: the geometric product of two orthogonal vectors, which spans a plane rather than a line.
The Unitive Way
The classical Christian mystical tradition describes three stages of the spiritual life: the Purgative Way (purification, corresponding to the C operator), the Illuminative Way (integration, the K operator), and the Unitive Way (union with God, the U operator). The third way does not replace the first two — it completes them. You cannot reach the Unitive Way without having run the C and K operators to completion. The sequence is fixed by the non-commutativity of the operators: $G = U \circ F \circ K \circ C$. Union comes last in the chain — not because it is most distant, but because it is what the chain is for.

The practical question Union poses: which unions are you in, and do they have orthogonal Lyapunov functions? A union with someone who has the same Lyapunov function you do — the same stability profile, the same strengths and vulnerabilities — is not guaranteed by the Theorem to produce a threshold larger than either's. The theorem guarantees only $\tau_{12} \leq \min(\tau_1, \tau_2)$. The equality case requires alignment, not sameness. Alignment means: your will and theirs run in the same direction. Sameness means: you and they are the same system, and the union adds nothing.
