Abraham Zacuto was born in Salamanca in 1452, into the flourishing Sephardic Jewish intellectual community of Castile. He studied at the University of Salamanca — one of Europe's oldest — and became a professor of astronomy and mathematics there, the only Jewish professor known to have held a chair at a major Iberian university in the fifteenth century. His great astronomical work, Ha-Hibbur ha-Gadol (The Great Composition), written in Hebrew around 1478, contained the most accurate astronomical tables in the world at the time — tables of solar declination, planetary positions, and eclipses, computed with a precision that surpassed the Alfonsine Tables used across Christian Europe.
In 1492, the Alhambra Decree expelled all Jews from Spain. Zacuto crossed into Portugal, where King João II had welcomed him as royal astronomer. His tables were translated into Latin and Castilian by his disciple Joseph Vizinho — the Almanach Perpetuum (Leiria, 1496) — and provided, along with the improved metal astrolabe he championed to replace the fragile wooden instruments then in use, to Vasco da Gama's expedition before the voyage to India (1497–1499). His eclipse tables saved Columbus's stranded crew in Jamaica in 1504, when Columbus used a predicted lunar eclipse to frighten the Taíno people into supplying food to his starving men. Two of the most consequential voyages in human history were navigated, in part, by Zacuto's calculations.
The Second Expulsion
In 1497, Portugal's King Manuel I ordered the forced conversion or expulsion of all Jews. This was Zacuto's second expulsion in five years — the F operator applied twice. He went first to North Africa (Fez, Tunis), then to the Ottoman Empire, then finally to Jerusalem, where he died around 1515. He arrived in Jerusalem as an old man, carrying his manuscripts. He had been expelled from every country he had lived in. The knowledge survived every expulsion. This is the dm³ F-fold: the catastrophic threshold after which the system cannot return to what it was — but the information in the system, the K-structure, is preserved across the fold.
The Sefer ha-Yuhasin — Book of Lineage
Zacuto's other great work, the Sefer ha-Yuhasin (Book of Lineage), is a universal history of the Jewish people from Adam to the year 1500, organized as a continuous chain of transmission: who learned from whom, who transmitted what to whom, across 5,260 years of recorded and reconstructed history. It is the most comprehensive chronicle of Jewish intellectual genealogy ever written, drawing on Talmudic sources, medieval chronicles, and contemporary records.
The Yuhasin is the g-series applied to human knowledge. Each link in the chain is a g-step: a transmission of accumulated understanding from one generation to the next. The chain is not monotone — there are persecutions, expulsions, destructions of libraries, centuries of interrupted transmission. But the chain holds. The Mercy Radius ($\varepsilon_0 = 1/3$) guarantees that even catastrophic perturbations within the stability radius[Ch 10] do not break the chain permanently. Zacuto's own life — expelled twice, arriving in Jerusalem as a refugee with his manuscripts — is the g-series running through the double fold.
Zacuto improved the astrolabe by replacing wood with copper — a material that does not warp with humidity or temperature, that holds its engraved scales precisely across decades of use. The astrolabe is an analog computer for solving problems of spherical astronomy: given the altitude of a star and the date, find the time; given the time and latitude, find the direction of Mecca or Jerusalem. It is a contact manifold made physical — a 2-dimensional surface on which the contact condition (the alignment of the rete with the tympan) gives you your position in the cosmos. Zacuto made the instrument permanent. He made the contact manifold out of metal.
Astronomy and Kabbalah
Zacuto was not only an astronomer. He was a Talmudic scholar steeped in the Kabbalistic tradition of the Salamanca circle, which included some of the most sophisticated Jewish mystics of the fifteenth century. His astronomical work and his Kabbalistic learning were not in tension. In the Kabbalistic framework, the celestial spheres are the outer garments of the divine attributes (the Sefirot) — the same structure the dm³ framework maps as the operator chain $G = U \circ F \circ K \circ C$. The astronomical tables that Zacuto computed were, in his own understanding, a description of the divine order made calculable. The K operator — Logos, coherence, proportion — governing both the astronomical tables and the Sefirot tree.

He drew from the depths of the sea — the C operator, gathering what has been scattered, compressing it into a form that can be carried. He carried it from Salamanca to Lisbon to Tunis to Jerusalem. He arrived in Jerusalem with manuscripts that would not be printed in full until 1566, fifty years after his death. The chain of transmission held. The knowledge reached the next generation. The g-series advanced.
