A room's physical environment can make an otherwise well-designed AV system perform poorly — or make a modest system perform beautifully. Evaluating a site environment goes beyond the basic site survey (Week 7) into measuring and characterizing conditions that directly affect audio and video quality.

Acoustics matters most for speech intelligibility. Reverberation time (how long sound persists after its source stops, often measured as RT60 — time to decay by 60 dB) is critical in a courtroom, where hard surfaces (marble, wood paneling, high ceilings) can make speech reverberate enough that words blur together by the time they reach the back row. NC ratings (Noise Criteria) quantify background noise from HVAC and other building systems — a room can have excellent speakers and microphones but still sound bad if the air handling system is too loud relative to the target NC rating.

Lighting affects video far more than most stakeholders expect: strong ambient light (sunlight through windows, overhead fluorescents) washes out projector images and creates glare on glossy displays and camera lenses, while uneven lighting on a witness or judge creates harsh shadows that make video conferencing and recording look unprofessional.

Recommending changes is the deliverable that follows evaluation: acoustic treatment (absorptive panels, carpet, acoustic ceiling tile) to control reverberation, blackout shades or UV-filtering film to control ambient light, or HVAC modifications to reduce background noise. These recommendations often fall outside a pure AV budget or scope — part of the job is clearly explaining to non-technical stakeholders why an environmental fix, not just better equipment, is the actual solution to a problem they're experiencing.
