Galileo's margins in Ptolemy's Almagest — Florence, 2026

In January 2026, the historian Ivan Malara was leafing through a 1551 copy of Ptolemy's Almagest in the National Central Library of Florence. He noticed handwriting in the margins. The hand was Galileo's — a young Galileo, around 1590, the year before he became Professor of Mathematics at Pisa. He had been studying the geocentric universe carefully, in private, before he ever published a word against it. This lesson reads those margins.

Marginalia (n., Latin): the notes a reader writes in the margins of a book. They are usually private. Sometimes — once a century or so — they are world-changing. In a 1551 copy of Ptolemy's Almagest, in the National Central Library of Florence, a young Galileo wrote out Psalm 145 and a string of astronomical observations in his own hand. The book stayed on its shelf for four hundred and thirty-five years before anyone noticed.

Activity: News-Reading Warm-Up — "The Scribbles in the Almagest"

Before reading (3 min) — Teacher writes these questions on the board. Students read silently before opening the article:

  1. What do you know about Galileo? In one sentence, what is he famous for?
  2. What is the difference between a geocentric and a heliocentric universe?
  3. Why might handwriting in the margin of an old book be valuable to a historian?
  4. When you find an old letter or book in your family, how does it feel? What does it tell you?

Read the Smithsonian piece (10 min). Students read silently and underline anything that surprises them. Then quick pair share (5 min): who found the notes, what was the book, what did the notes contain?

"The book had been in the library for centuries. Nobody had looked closely at the margins. Then, in January 2026, somebody did. This is how knowledge moves — slowly, then suddenly."

Then together, build a quick timeline on the board:

~150 CE Ptolemy writes the Almagest in Alexandria. The Earth is at the centre of everything.
~820 CE The book is translated into Arabic. The name "Almagest" comes from the Arabic al-majisṭī — "the greatest."
1175 Translated into Latin in Toledo. It becomes the European astronomy textbook.
1543 Copernicus publishes De Revolutionibus. The Sun goes to the centre — but few believe him.
1551 A printer in Basel produces the copy of the Almagest our story revolves around.
~1590 A young Galileo, in his mid-20s, sits with the 1551 Almagest and writes notes in the margins. He is studying Ptolemy carefully — before he is publicly Copernican.
1610 Galileo publishes Sidereus Nuncius — moons of Jupiter, mountains on the Moon. The geocentric model begins to fall.
1633 Galileo is tried by the Roman Inquisition. He recants, then whispers — perhaps — "And yet it moves."
Jan 2026 Ivan Malara, a historian at the National Central Library of Florence, leafs through the 1551 Almagest and recognises the hand.
"Four hundred and thirty-five years between when the ink dried and when it was read. The book was always there. The reader had to arrive."

Activity: Guided Reading — The Galilean Confluence, opening pages

Students read the first two pages of the companion paper (or, if the paper is not yet available, the Smithsonian and Science.org articles printed side by side). Underline vocabulary from Stage 2. Mark in the margin one sentence that surprises them — a small piece of marginalia of their own.

Comprehension check — individual (5 min):

  1. What was the book in which the notes were found, and how old was the printed copy?
  2. What three kinds of writing did Malara identify in the margins? (Hint: a psalm, astronomical observations, and arithmetical calculations.)
  3. Why is the date 1590 important in Galileo's life?
  4. In your own words: what did Galileo do before he became famous for opposing geocentrism?
  5. The companion paper calls this discovery a "confluence" — two streams meeting. Which two streams?

Teacher reviews whole-class (7 min). Focus on the quiet apprenticeship: every public revolution is preceded by a long, private study of the thing being overturned. Connect to the dm³ framework: in operator terms, Galileo lived through the Fold operator F — the moment a system curves back onto its own prior assumptions and looks at them from outside. The marginalia is the visible trace of that fold.

🃏 Card A — The Margins Matter

Most history-of-science books focus on the printed text — what was officially published. The Galileo discovery says: the most interesting work is sometimes in the margins, written privately, never meant to be read.

Where in your own life is the "real" thinking happening — in the published version, or in the margins? In notebooks? Voice memos? Conversations? What gets lost when we only look at finished work?

🃏 Card B — The Quiet Apprenticeship

Galileo did not reject Ptolemy without reading him. Around 1590 — twenty years before Sidereus Nuncius — he was studying the geocentric universe in his own hand, on his own time. He earned his disagreement.

Have you ever changed your mind about something important? Did you study what you ended up rejecting? What is the difference between rejecting something you understand and rejecting something you have not bothered to read?

🃏 Card C — Psalm 145 in an Astronomy Book

One of the things Galileo wrote in the margin was not astronomy at all — it was Psalm 145, a praise-song. Many people imagine science and faith as opposing teams. The young Galileo, copying scripture into a Greek astronomy textbook, suggests something more complicated.

What does it tell you that he wrote a psalm and a calculation on the same page? Is the boundary between "faith" and "knowledge" as clear as it is sometimes drawn?

🃏 Card D — The Reader Has to Arrive

The notes were written around 1590. They were read for the first time in 2026. The book did not change. Something in the reader changed. Malara had been trained to recognise that handwriting; he was looking; he opened the right book.

What knowledge in your own life is "already there," waiting for someone with the right preparation to see it? An old letter from a grandparent? A song? A photograph? What would it take for you to be the reader who finally arrives?

Activity: Exit Paragraph — Written Response (choose one)

Option A — Summary: Summarise the discovery in your own words. Who found what, where, and when? Why does it matter? Use at least 6 vocabulary words from today's lesson and at least two sentences in the past perfect.

Option B — Personal Marginalia: Write a short note as if you were Galileo in 1590, sitting with Ptolemy. What would you write in the margin of a book you partly admire and partly disagree with? Begin: "I have been reading…"

Option C — The Confluence: The companion paper calls this discovery a confluence — two streams meeting. Identify the two streams in your own words. Then describe a confluence in your own life: a moment when two things you knew separately suddenly met and changed how you saw them.

Activity: "Your Own Marginalia" — Pair Reflection + Share

Discuss in pairs, then write 3–5 sentences for each:

  1. Choose a book, song, photograph, or document from your own family or country that has been "on a shelf" for a long time. What is in its margins? What might a future reader notice that nobody has noticed yet?
  2. Galileo lived in a moment when a 1,400-year-old idea (geocentric Ptolemy) was being slowly replaced by a 50-year-old idea (heliocentric Copernicus). Can you name an idea in your own field — work, religion, family, politics — that is right now being replaced? What are you doing in your margins about it?
  3. In the dm³ framework, the moment a system looks back at its own assumptions is called the Fold. Describe a fold in your own thinking. When did you last look back at something you had taken for granted and see it from outside?
"The margin is where the future leaves its first signature."

Teacher Notes — For stronger B2/C1 students: assign the Science.org article as supplementary reading and ask them to compare its register and length with the Smithsonian piece. Add an extension question on whether marginalia should be treated as a primary or secondary source. For lower B2 students: print the Smithsonian piece, pre-highlight the five most important sentences, and let students read in pairs. Provide sentence starters for the discussion cards ("In my country… / I had not thought about… / What surprises me is…"). The timeline can be drawn on the board and built up together rather than handed out. Cultural note: several students may have a strong religious response to Card C — keep it open, descriptive, and non-judgmental: the lesson is about how a young scientist held both a psalm and a calculation on one page, not about which one is "right."
