§ I · The Same Room

Prague, and a bench at the eyepiece

It is easy to tell the story of the scientific revolution as if it happened in one lineage and one language. It did not. In the imperial Prague of Rudolf II, at the turn of the seventeenth century, the observatory drew observers the way a lamp draws everything with eyes — and among them was David Gans, a Jewish scholar of Westphalian birth who had settled in the city. Gans did not watch the new astronomy from outside a window. He sat at the instruments: by his own account he took part, over three consecutive days, in observations alongside Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler at the imperial observatory.

This is the fact the chapter turns on, and it is worth holding still for a moment. The man who compiled the most precise naked-eye star positions in history, and the man who would break the orbits open into ellipses, were sharing their work with a correspondent who wrote in Hebrew and would carry what he learned back to a different readership. There was no wall between "Jewish astronomy" and "the" astronomy. There was a bench, and people on it.

Gans (1541–1613) had come to Prague around the age of forty and stayed. He wrote two astronomical books in Hebrew: a short one, Magen David (1612), and a larger survey, Neḥmad ve-Naʿim — the second finished in his lifetime but not printed until 1743, more than a century after his death. What he did in those pages is quietly modern: he laid out the three competing pictures of the heavens — Ptolemy's Earth-centred spheres, Copernicus's moving Earth, and Brahe's hybrid — and described each fairly, without forcing a verdict. That even-handedness was not indecision; it was the reporting of a man who had stood at the instruments and knew how hard the question was.

Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (1591–1655), born on Crete into a family of scholars, took the other doorway. At Padua he attended the lectures of Galileo Galilei in the academic year 1609–1610 — the exact winter the telescope was turning astronomy inside out — and was granted the rare privilege of looking through Galileo's own instrument at the night sky. He then spent a wandering life across Egypt, Poland, Lithuania, and Amsterdam, and in his Sefer Elim (1629) he set down, for a Hebrew audience, the case for the new cosmos in language that left no doubt where he stood: Copernicus's arguments, he wrote, were so compelling that only a fool would reject them.

§ III · What the Bridge Carries

Integration, not a parallel track

The temptation, looking back, is to file Gans and Delmedigo under "Jewish science" — a separate tradition running alongside the real one. The record refuses that filing. Gans observed with Brahe and Kepler; Delmedigo learned from Galileo and looked through his glass. They argued the same Copernican question their Christian contemporaries argued, in the same decades, sometimes in the same buildings. The only difference downstream was the language they chose to write it up in — Hebrew rather than Latin — and the readership that language opened.

That is the whole freight of this bridge, and it carries the throughline of the book forward without a mystery attached: the scholars who cared about the heavens moved between communities as easily as knowledge itself does. The instruments did not check anyone's genealogy. A star position measured at Benátky is a star position; a moon of Jupiter seen through Galileo's tube is there for any eye that reaches the eyepiece.

A telescope has no readership. Whoever puts an eye to it sees the same sky — and that, not any secret lineage, is why the revolution could not be kept in one house.

From here the span widens outward — into the clubs and academies where the next century organised its curiosity — but the pivot is this pair at the eyepiece: proof that the scientific revolution was never a closed room, only a very bright one, and that the door was open to anyone who could do the work.
