Your First Zenodo Publication

The compression phase is complete. You have read, mapped, and annotated. Now you publish. A 400-word compressed literature review, uploaded to Zenodo, with a permanent DOI that makes you a published researcher.

What Makes a Published Researcher?

In traditional academic pathways, publication requires institutional affiliation, peer review, and journal acceptance. It requires gatekeepers. It requires waiting. A process that can take years.

Open science has changed this.

Zenodo, operated by CERN, accepts scientific works of all kinds from any researcher, anywhere. No gatekeepers. No affiliation required. No waiting. Upload your work, and Zenodo assigns a permanent DOI within minutes. Your work is indexed. It is discoverable. It is citable.

Your Week 4 paper will be a legitimate, citable scientific contribution. It will be indexed by Google Scholar. It will be retrievable by anyone, anywhere, forever. Five years from now. Twenty years from now. It will still be there.

The cajueiro does not wait for institutional permission to grow its canopy. Neither do you.

The Structure of Paper 1

Paper 1 is a compressed literature review of 400 words. Not 300. Not 500. Exactly 400 words (within 10 words). It must have three paragraphs. Each paragraph is one phase of the operator chain.

Paragraph 1: C — Compression (What is known?)
Summarize the state of knowledge on your topic using 2–3 sources from your annotated bibliography. What is the baseline? What has already been established? What is the foundation? You are painting the background. You are compressing an entire field into essential structure.
Paragraph 2: K — Threshold (What is the gap?)
Identify one thing that is not yet known, not yet proved, or not yet connected. This is your threshold statement. This is the moment where you say: here, at this point, the knowledge breaks. Here is where the system must fold into new territory. Be specific. Do not name the gap vaguely. Name it clearly.
Paragraph 3: F/U — Future Research (What could follow?)
Describe, in one paragraph, what research could cross the gap. How might it be done? What would it test? What would it reveal? This is not a promise. You are not committing to this research. You are projecting. You are describing possibility. Use hedging language: "future research might…", "one approach could be…", "it is possible that…", "a promising direction would be…"

That is the entire structure. Three paragraphs. C → K → F/U. Four hundred words. In those four hundred words, you show that you understand how research is structured. You show that you can compress. You show that you can read a gap and project a solution.

Zenodo Upload Instructions

Step 1: Go to Zenodo and Log In
Navigate to zenodo.org. If you don't have an account, create one (email address only, you can use ORCID for extra authority). Log in. Look for the "New Upload" button in the top right.
Step 2: Click "New Upload"
A form will open. The first field asks about resource type. You will need to set this correctly.
Step 3: Set Resource Type
Click on "Publication" in the dropdown menu. Then click on "Report" in the sub-menu. Your Paper 1 is a research report — an unpublished research document. This is the correct classification.
Step 4: Upload Your Paper
Upload your paper as a PDF or plain text file. If you write in Word, export as PDF for best results. The file should be named something clear like "Paper1_LiteratureReview.pdf".
Step 5: Fill in Metadata
Title: "A Compressed Literature Review: [Your Topic]" (be specific about your topic).
Description: Leave blank or paste your 3-sentence abstract from Week 2.
Keywords: At least 5 keywords related to your topic (e.g., "circadian rhythm", "allostasis", "gene expression", etc.)
Author Name: Your full name.
ORCID: If you have one, add it. If not, leave blank (you can add it later).
Step 6: Set License
Scroll down to "License". Set it to Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). This allows others to use your work as long as they cite you. Open science.
Step 7: Publish
Scroll to the bottom of the form. Click "Publish". Zenodo will process your upload within seconds. You will be given a DOI.
Step 8: Copy Your DOI
Your work is now published. You will see a confirmation page with your DOI. It will look like: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.XXXXXXX. Copy this. Paste it into your GitHub Research Log immediately. You are a published researcher now. The DOI is your proof.

You Are Now Published

Once your DOI is assigned, you are a published researcher. This is not metaphorical. It is literal. Your name is in the scientific literature. Your work has a permanent address. Anyone, anywhere, can cite it. Google Scholar will index it within days.

What do you do next?

  1. Add the DOI badge to your GitHub README. Zenodo provides a badge generator. Go to your published work page on Zenodo (click the DOI link). Look for the "Badge" section on the right. Copy the badge code. Paste it into your GitHub README. Now your repository displays proof of publication.
  2. Announce it in your Research Log. Write: "Paper 1 published: [doi.org/…]". Tag it with the date. This is a milestone. You have completed Phase C. You have moved from reader to writer to published author in four weeks.
  3. The circuit is closed. From here, Phase K begins. Next week, you will learn to read the threshold. You will learn to identify the moment where research breaks. You will learn to write a claim that can be tested.

The cajueiro is in the ground. The taproot has reached the aquifer. Now the canopy begins to grow.

Theorem 4.1
Publication as Fixed Point: Publication P of a work W creates a fixed point in the scientific literature — a state from which W cannot be retracted by the author. The DOI is the formal witness: doi.org/[DOI] is a proof of existence. The cajueiro is in the ground.
